Antigua is a nice colonial town but since I have been to a couple other places like this I couldn't help but to compare it to other places I have been e.g. Cartagena. FYI Cartagena trumps Antigua.
A picture of the arch.
And a beautiful church
And some other beautiful building that is falling apart but still beautiful.
After I wandered around for a bit I was hungry. So I wandered around some more, bought mango off a street vender (crossed my fingers to not get sick) and then found a pizza place to eat. Afterward I hurriedly tried to find my hotel...got lost again...asked for directions twice before I got to my hotel. When I got to the hotel I quickly changed for my journey to volcano Pacaya.
Now I had looked up this volcano online and apparently it had erupted on Sunday. I asked the hotel receptionist if it was closed and she told me no it wasn't and that it had erupte last week (I guess Sunday is last week- mind you today is Tueaday). So off I go to the volcano. I ended up chatting with a guy from Germany who was also going on the trip. We walked to the corner and got on the bus (bus was late of course) and then picked up a couple more people until the minibus was full. Then off we went on our drive to the park entrance. We hiked a little over an hour to see Volcano Pacaya.
After I took this picture we hiked down to see the lava. Going down the volcano was a bit difficult as it was like gravel and you were basically sliding down the side of the volcano -spoiler alert- and I imagine this is somewhat what it would be like to go volcano surfing except surfing would be much scarier!
Anyways we hiked down the volcano and climb onto the rocks that were still hot from the eruption on Sunday.
You can see the steam from the fire and that red stuff in the background...yeah fire. I also have a video but don't think I can post it. We then had some roasted marshmallows and then hiked back up the volcano side. The hike back up was a bit difficult because it was like gravel. Then we got back to the hill and hiked back down to the park entrance...this also was a bit difficult and I almost fell a couple times. We took a ride back to Antigua and was dropped off in the Central Park. Thank goodness the guy from Germany was with me as I had no idea how to get back to the hotel.
When we got back I took a hot shower. I figured out to get hot water. You can only turn the pipe on a little so it trickles down and you have to get it before other people do! Basically you have to sacrifice something.
All in all a long day. Tomorrow will be another adventure beacuse I am going to El Salvador but don't know quite how to get there. :-)
These pictures are magnificent! Did you take them all or are some post cards? Is this with your phone? Or do you have a camera they came out really well!
ReplyDeleteAt your request I am responding. I took them with my iPhone and then used an app.
